What It Costs

What Does a Brake Job Cost in North Bay?

A brake job costs whatever your vehicle actually needs, and the honest answer is that nobody can quote it properly without looking. AutoNorth pulls a wheel, measures what is left, and gives you the price before any work starts.

  • Pads alone or pads and rotors. This is the single biggest fork in the bill, and it depends on how much rotor thickness is left. See the comparison below.
  • Which corner. Fronts do most of the stopping and usually wear first. Doing all four at once is not always necessary.
  • What the vehicle is. A compact car and a three-quarter-ton truck are different parts at different prices.
  • What else is seized. Northern Ontario road salt is hard on calipers, slide pins and hardware. Sometimes the pads are the cheap part of the job.
  • Drums or discs. Many vehicles still run drums on the rear, and drum work prices differently from disc work.

Call AutoNorth with your year, make and model, and the shop will tell you what it is likely looking at and what it will cost to find out for certain.

Warning Signs

How Do You Know Your Brakes Need Work?

Most brakes tell you before they fail. A squeal that comes and goes, a grinding that does not, a pedal that pulses, or a car that pulls to one side under braking are all worth getting looked at rather than listened to for another month.

  • A high squeal when you brake. Many pads carry a small metal tab that touches the rotor when the friction material gets low. It is designed to make that noise. It is the brake equivalent of a low-fuel light.
  • Grinding. That is usually metal on metal, which means the friction material is gone and the rotor is being damaged every time you stop. This one is not a next-month job.
  • A pulsing pedal. Often uneven rotor thickness. You feel it as a shudder through the pedal or the steering wheel when slowing from highway speed.
  • Pulling to one side. Frequently a seized caliper or slide pin, which means one wheel is doing more of the stopping than it should.
  • A soft or sinking pedal. Treat this as urgent. It can point at a hydraulic problem rather than worn friction material.

The Real Decision

Pads Only vs Pads and Rotors: Which Do You Actually Need?

Rotors have a minimum thickness stamped on them by the manufacturer. If there is enough material left and the surface is true, new pads alone are fine. If the rotor is below spec or badly scored, new pads on a worn rotor will not stop properly and will not last.

Resurfacing rotors used to be the middle option and still is on some vehicles. On many modern cars the rotors are made thin enough from new that there is nothing safe to machine off. AutoNorth measures and tells you which of the three applies to yours.

The part nobody thinks about: brake fluid

Brake fluid absorbs moisture out of the air over time. That is not a defect, it is how the fluid is designed to work, and it is why manufacturers put a replacement interval on it. Water in the system lowers the temperature at which the fluid boils, and fluid that boils compresses, which is what a soft pedal on a long descent feels like. Moisture also corrodes the system from the inside, which in a road-salt climate is the last thing the hydraulics need. Ask AutoNorth to look at the condition of yours while the wheels are already off, and check what your manufacturer specifies.

All of It

What Brake Work Does AutoNorth Do?

AutoNorth Auto Repair has been doing brake work in North Bay since opening on Cholette St in September 2025, and handles pads, rotors, drums and parking brake repairs at 1520 Cholette St, on cars, light trucks, work vehicles and hybrids.

  • Discs, pads and rotors. The everyday job on most vehicles on the road here.
  • Drums and shoes. Plenty of vehicles still run drums on the rear axle, and they need different parts and a different set of hands.
  • Parking brakes. The part that quietly seizes over a couple of salty winters and then fails its safety inspection.
  • Seized hardware comes with the territory. Slide pins and hardware rust solid in this climate, so ask what condition yours are in when the wheel is off.
  • Brake work on a safety inspection. AutoNorth is a licensed MTO Motor Vehicle Inspection Station and an enrolled DriveON facility, so brake faults found during an inspection get sorted in the same shop.

See It First

You See the Worn Pad Before You Pay for a New One

Brakes are the easiest place in a shop to be sold something you did not need, because almost nobody climbs under their own car to check. AutoNorth's digital inspection sends photos and video of your actual brakes to your phone before you approve anything.

  • Photos of your vehicle, not a diagram. The report shows the pad that came off your car, with the measurement.
  • Urgent and can-wait are separated. A pad at the wear indicator and a pad with a season left on it are not presented the same way.
  • You approve from your phone. Each item, individually, without calling the shop or standing at a counter.
  • Nobody is paid to find work. AutoNorth's technicians are on straight time rather than flat rate, so finding you an extra repair does not pay anyone more.

"My wife's car needed brakes done. They took us in right away, got them done very quickly and at a very good price. Service was amazing and friendly. It's where I'm taking my car from now on."

Brake Repair: Common Questions

How do I know if I need new brakes?

Listen for a high squeal that comes and goes, and treat grinding as urgent because that is usually metal on metal. A pulsing pedal, a pull to one side under braking, or a pedal that sinks are all worth getting checked. AutoNorth pulls a wheel, measures what is left, and shows you the photos before quoting anything.

Do I have to replace the rotors as well as the pads?

Only if the rotors need it. Rotors carry a minimum thickness set by the manufacturer, and if yours are above it and the surface is even, new pads on their own are the right job. AutoNorth measures rather than guesses and tells you which applies to your vehicle.

Does AutoNorth work on drum brakes and parking brakes?

Yes. AutoNorth handles pads, rotors, drums and parking brake repairs. Plenty of vehicles on North Bay roads still run drums on the rear axle, and the parking brake is a common failure after a few salty winters.

Can brake problems fail an Ontario safety inspection?

Yes, brakes are part of a Vehicle Safety Certificate inspection. AutoNorth is a licensed MTO Motor Vehicle Inspection Station, so anything found on an inspection can be quoted and repaired in the same shop rather than sending you elsewhere.

Why do brakes wear out faster in North Bay?

Road salt is the main reason. Salt and brine attack calipers, slide pins and hardware, so components seize and wear unevenly here in a way they do not in a drier climate. Winter grit on the rotors does not help either.
