Why AutoNorth: The Shop and the Person Behind It
AutoNorth Auto Repair is an independent North Bay shop opened in September 2025 by Ryan Christadler, a Toyota-certified Master Technician with hybrid certification who trained at Centennial College and apprenticed at Aurora Toyota before leaving the dealership world. The training came with him. The flat-rate pay structure did not, and that single decision is the reason this shop can afford to tell you a repair can wait.

Why Ryan Left the Dealership
Ryan Christadler trained at Centennial College, apprenticed at Aurora Toyota, holds his 310S automotive service technician licence, and became a Toyota-certified Master Technician with hybrid certification. Then he left that world and opened his own shop on Cholette St in September 2025.
He is also a full-time firefighter. The shop is not a sideline he tinkers at between shifts, it is a second full day, and it is the reason the pay structure and the inspection reports were settled before the first customer arrived rather than improvised afterwards.
The training was never the problem. Dealership technicians are some of the best-trained people in the trade, and Ryan came up through that system properly rather than around it.
What he left was the pay structure. Most dealership service departments run on flat rate: a technician is paid a fixed number of hours for a job regardless of how long it actually takes. Beat the clock and you earn more. Take your time and you earn less. Find nothing wrong and you earn nothing at all.
That is a system with an opinion about your vehicle, and the opinion is not neutral.
Flat Rate vs Straight Time: Why It Changes Everything
AutoNorth pays its technicians straight time. They are paid for the hours they work, not for the hours a book says a job should take. It sounds like an internal accounting detail and it is the single most important thing on this page.
| Flat rate vs straight time | Flat rate, the usual model | Straight time, how AutoNorth pays |
|---|---|---|
| How the technician is paid | A set number of hours per job, however long it takes | For the hours actually worked |
| What rushing does for them | Finishing early pays the same as the full book time | Nothing. There is no clock to beat |
| What finding extra work does | Adds billable hours to their pay | Nothing. The pay is the same either way |
| What a difficult job does | A seized bolt costs the technician money | It takes the time it takes |
| What it means for you | Two incentives pointing away from your interests | Neither incentive exists |
| Built around | Throughput | The time a job actually takes |
This is why AutoNorth can show you a photograph of a pad with a season left on it and tell you to come back in the spring. Nobody in the building loses anything by saying that.
What AutoNorth Is Licensed and Approved For
Certifications are not decoration. Each one below is an organisation that vetted this shop before putting its name near it, usually because it is the one paying the invoice.
- Toyota-certified Master Technician with hybrid certification. The top of Toyota's technician ladder, plus the hybrid qualification, which is why hybrids do not have to leave town for service.
- Licensed MTO Motor Vehicle Inspection Station and enrolled DriveON facility. AutoNorth issues Ontario Vehicle Safety Certificates for cars and light trucks, plus yellow-sticker annual trailer inspections.
- Castrol Approved Agent. The oil side of the shop, covering gas and diesel oil changes.
- Approved repair facility for Canada General and Global Warranty. Two of the warranty providers behind used vehicles. AutoNorth deals with the administrator directly on an extended warranty claim.
- Certified Holman service shop. Holman is a North American fleet management company, and that approval covers government and municipal fleet vehicles serviced in the North Bay area.
What AutoNorth Looks Like From the Inside
A fully equipped shop on Cholette St that has worked on roughly 2,000 vehicles since opening in September 2025 and services 8 to 10 vehicles a day, on all makes and models, gas, diesel and hybrid.
- Dealership-trained technicians. The training came from the dealership system. The pay structure did not.
- Everything under one roof. Oil, tires and storage, brakes, exhaust, AC, diagnostics, suspension, alignments, engine and transmission work, and inspections. See the full list.
- Photographs on every job. The digital inspection report is the part customers notice first and talk about afterwards.
- Real people on the phone. Call (705) 472-6060 and you are talking to the shop, not a call centre or a service advisor working from a script.
- Rated 5.0 across 24 Google reviews. Read them here.
What AutoNorth Is Actually Trying to Do
Make it possible to be told the truth about your vehicle by someone who does not gain from the answer, and then prove it with a photograph.
- Every shop in town says it is honest. That claim is free, which is exactly why it is worth nothing on its own.
- So the pay structure had to change first. Straight time removes the incentive before anyone has to resist it. That is a design decision, not a promise.
- Then the evidence had to be visible. Photos and video of your own vehicle, sent to your phone, so you are not being asked to take anybody's word for anything.
- And the answer had to be allowed to be no. A report that never says "this is fine for another season" is a sales document with a different name on it.
If that is the kind of shop you have been looking for, the number is (705) 472-6060.
Why Should You Believe Any of This?
You should not, on the strength of a page the shop wrote about itself. What you can do is check the two claims that are actually checkable, and ignore the rest until you have been in once.
- The certifications are verifiable. A licensed MTO inspection station, a Castrol Approved Agent, an approved repair facility for two warranty companies and a certified Holman fleet shop are all things somebody else decided. Ask any of them.
- The reviews are somebody else's platform. 5.0 across 24 Google reviews sits on Google, not here, and you can read the wording rather than the number. The reviews page links straight to it.
- The inspection report is the real test. Book anything, even an oil change, and see whether what lands on your phone matches what this page says. That is a real-world check, and it settles the question better than any amount of copy.
- The rest is a claim. Straight-time pay, honest recommendations, no rushing. Every shop says a version of it. Judge it on the first visit, not on this page.
If a website could prove a mechanic was honest, this trade would not have the reputation it has. What a website can do is describe how the shop is set up and then get out of the way.
What This Means Next Time Your Car Makes a Noise
Very little of the above matters until something goes wrong. When it does, the difference shows up in three specific moments.
- When you describe the problem. You can say what it sounds like rather than guessing at a part, because working out the cause is the shop's job and nobody is being paid to guess quickly.
- When the findings come back. You get photographs of your own vehicle rather than a verbal list at a counter, and you look at them on your own time instead of deciding on the spot.
- When something can wait. A report that says a set of pads has another season on it costs the shop nothing to send, because nobody's pay depends on you approving it.
- And when it cannot. The same report flags what is genuinely urgent, and that flag means more precisely because the shop is willing to use the other one.
See everything AutoNorth does, or just call (705) 472-6060 and describe the noise.
About AutoNorth: Common Questions
Who owns AutoNorth Auto Repair?
Ryan Christadler. He trained at Centennial College, apprenticed at Aurora Toyota, and is a Toyota-certified Master Technician with hybrid certification. He opened the shop on Cholette St in September 2025.
What does straight time pay mean for me as a customer?
It means the technician working on your vehicle is paid for the hours they work rather than a fixed book time per job. Nobody earns more by rushing your vehicle or by finding you extra work, which removes two incentives that work against you at most shops.
Is AutoNorth a dealership?
No, it is an independent shop. The training is dealership training, including a Toyota-certified Master Technician with hybrid certification, but without the dealership overhead or the flat-rate pay structure.
How long has AutoNorth been open?
The shop opened on Cholette St in September 2025. It services 8 to 10 vehicles a day for families, fleets and work trucks across the North Bay area.
Can AutoNorth work on my hybrid or late-model vehicle?
Yes. Owner Ryan Christadler holds hybrid certification alongside his Toyota Master Technician qualification, and the shop runs a dual-refrigerant AC machine covering the newer R-1234yf systems, so late-model vehicles do not need a dealership booking.
Does Ryan hold a 310S licence?
Yes. Ryan Christadler holds his 310S automotive service technician licence and is a Toyota-certified Master Technician with hybrid certification. That is separate from the shop itself being a licensed MTO Motor Vehicle Inspection Station and an enrolled DriveON facility, which is what allows it to issue Ontario Vehicle Safety Certificates.
Is Ryan a full-time firefighter?
Yes. Ryan Christadler is a full-time firefighter as well as the owner and a working technician at AutoNorth Auto Repair.
